About the job:
As a Nurse, you take care of patients while they are at a hospital or clinic. You work with other people such as doctors to diagnose and treat the patients. You also observe the patients while they are being treated and talk to the patients.
If you are also interested in Psychology, you may become a Mental Health Nurse. The educational requirements for this specific career are listed in the Education section at the bottom of this page.
As a Nurse, you may have to:
- Deal with difficult patients
- Work demanding 12-hour shifts
You should know that in Lebanon, there is a shortage of nurses due to low wages, the absence of a social security network and the unscientific classification and specialisations of those working in this profession.
As a Nurse, you may get to:
- Work only 15 days every month
- Help save lives and make people feel better
- 40-50 hours per week
- Varied working times
As a nurse, your schedule depends on where you work. In a clinic, you work regular hours but in hospitals you work very different hours. You may have shifts where you work a lot for one week and take time off for another week.

Education stuff:
If you would like to become a Nurse, you will need:
- A Nursing degree
- You can also get a Masters degree and specialize in various areas
If you would like to become a Mental Health Nurse, the Ministry of Health requires you to have the following:
Education
- Degree in nursing (preferably BSN) registered at the Ministry of Public
- MSN in psychiatry/mental health nursing is a plus
Experience
- 2-5 years
- Experience in a mental health setting is a plus
Competencies
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent communication, problem solving, interpersonal and
conflict resolution skills - Cultural sensitivity
- Ability to adhere to ethical considerations and principles with
regard to work with vulnerable populations
Computer skills
- Basic Microsoft office and internet use
Language
- Fluency in Arabic and in English

Biography
Joy Hannoun El Hajj first obtained her BS in Nursing in 2007 and started working as a full time Nurse. Joy then continued her education and obtained two masters degrees - one in research and another in hospital management in 2017. Now she is working as head of Nursing Department at Lebanese German University.
